About Us
The Southwest Region Infant Hearing program is one of twelve program regions in Ontario that coordinate the Infant Hearing program through the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. The Southwest Region Infant Hearing Program is responsible for coordinating services in the communities of Elgin - St. Thomas, Middlesex - London, Oxford, Lambton, Huron, Perth, Owen Sound and Grey-Bruce.
All IHP Audiologists have received specialized training from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
The IHP Audiologist will identify or rule out a hearing loss. The audiological assessment will provide more information than the newborn screening and may take up to two hours to administer. Additional visits may be required to complete all necessary assessments.
The IHP Audiologist will do several kinds of tests. One test measures the movement of the eardrum. Another uses a tiny microphone to detect a response from inside the ear. A further test measures your baby's brainwaves in response to sounds using small sticker electrodes placed on the forehead and behind the ears.
When the assessment is finished, the audiologist will talk to you about the results. Most babies are found to have normal hearing. If your baby has a hearing loss, the IHP Audiologist will offer you follow-up support services from the IHP Family Support Worker. You will be offered support and unbiased information throughout the decision making process to choose a communication method for your baby.
